STORY

The project was founded in 2020 by owner Alexander Ertler and has seen itself from the beginning as a place for artistic practice, exchange and social experimentation.

 

The name originates from Wilhelmine von Montleart (1792–1867), an important Viennese patron of the arts who supported artists in the 19th century and championed the connection between art, culture, and social progress. Our residency continues this tradition today: as a space where art is not only created but also provides impetus for community life .

Montleart is part of a multi-year neighborhood development process that explores new forms of sustainable and socially responsible living and community. Art plays a central role in this process: it inspires, connects, and opens up new perspectives for a diverse neighborhood.

What began as an initiative to promote artistic work is today a vibrant hub of creativity and collaboration. Numerous artists from the fields of visual arts, performance, literature, music, design, and interdisciplinary projects have already worked here and gained important inspiration for their practice.
